BEACHES OF ALICANTE, COSTA BLANCA, SPAIN

The beaches of Alicante are a strong attraction for tourists as well as the Spanish community and Alicante's mild climate makes the beaches an all-year-round attraction with their beauty and soft, clean sand and there a great many to choose from.

Campello Beach

The best beaches in Alicante are Mucho Vista and San Juan a tram ride away from the city centre. Playa San Juan is around 7 km long, and Mucho Vista is 4km long and as they are both wide beaches it means there is always room, even in high seasons.

Muchavista Beach

Nudists, particularly, should head for the coves of Cabo de las Huertas, which separates the south-facing Postiguet and Albufereta beaches from the east-facing Playa San Juan. The Island of Tabarca is a must-see if you have time.

The sands simply never run out in Alicante. But if you prefer rocks, at the Cabo de las Huertas you'll find a rugged, rocky area with coves such as los Cantarales, los Judios and Palmera.

An urban beach? El Postiguet, located almost within the city itself, at the foot of the Benacantil mountain, next to the port. And there's still another called los Saladares, Iying south of the city in the area known as Agua Amarga.Nudist beaches? El Saladar and Los Judios. For scuba divers we can recommend the shores of the Isla de Tabarca off the coast.

Hundreds of kilometres of the finest beaches in the country. Along the Costa Blanca, in Alicante, in Valencia Terra i Mar or in Castellón Costa de Azahar. A continual fiesta for the senses.

Not many cities can claim to possess such a wide collection of the most beautiful golden, Alicante beaches and magical coves within the city boundaries, almost all of which have been awarded blue flags by the European Union for the high quality of the water and the beaches.

Gabriel Miró, the noted local writer, used to say that Alicante is a city traversed by the Mediterranean Sea, and he was not far from the truth. Its splendid sea front of beautiful beaches, most of them even and sandy, stretches for 15 kilometres. Only the area known as Cabo de las Huertas presents an irregular terrain. Moreover, most of the beaches boast the blue flag granted every year by the European Union, a guarantee of cleanliness, water quality and optimal services.

Urbanova - El Saladar Beach
Setting out from the South, we come across a long and well-equipped beach. Little known to foreign tourists, it is therefore the quietest of them all. This beach, near to El Altet airport, is officially called Playa del Saladar due to the salt pans that used to exist nearby. However, it is popularly known as Playa de Urbanova, the name of the residential complex facing it. Free from parking problems, bathers can stretch out comfortably on the sand, and enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the city and the bay of Alicante.

Postiguet Beach
Right in the city centre, and boasting a palm-lined promenade, we find Playa del Postiguet. Situated next to the leisure district at the city's marine complex, it is cleaned daily and offers a wide range of services both to bathers and visitors to the surrounding area. Development work at its northern corner, near the local station for the 'trenet', or coastal railway that runs between Alicante and Denia, has recovered the strip of beach known as Playa del Cocó, where local fishermen used to beach their boats.

Albufereta Beach
Going Northeast, we quickly arrive at Playa de la Albufereta, named after the small coastal lake or 'albufera' that once existed on the spot. This lake used to have its own harbour around which the Roman-Iberian village of Lucentum, the origin of modern Alicante, sprang up. This beach, boasting good facilities, enjoys a privileged situation, sheltered from the currents and is an excellent place to practise water sports and swim in safety.

Almadraba Beach
Continuing along the coast, we come across another sandy beach, the Playa de la Almadraba. Smaller in size than the other beaches, it is used almost exclusively by the residents of the surrounding complexes.

Cabo de Las Huertas - Coves
A spot whose ragged outline conceals a string of quiet, rocky coves, Cala de los Judíos being a typical example. Their remoteness and difficult access means that two of them, Cantalares and Palmera, are frequented by nudists.

San Juan Beach
The most beautiful beach in the province of Alicante. San Juan beach boasts almost seven kilometres of spacious, wide beach with fine sand. The numerous shops, restaurants and other leisure establishments offer a wide range of supplementary activities including a superb 18-hole golf course just a stone's throw away. Moreover, it features all the usual community services, since Playa de San Juan has merged with the city, becoming one of its residential areas. Beach Hotel in San Juan
